Taking an active part: María José (18) from Colombia

1. Which place in your area is your favorite one?

I like a place called »La Loma de la Cruz« near the city of Cali very much. For me it is a very special place where I meet up with my friends and sometimes my family and I spend some time there. It is very quiet over there and you always have a fresh breeze blowing.

2. Which profession do you want to exercise later and do you think that you can make this world a better place through your profession?

One day I would like to teach theater. I think by playing and teaching theatre I can play my part to change this world. In my opinion, theater is the best way to change the consciousness/awareness of people. Aside from that you can express your own feelings.

3. What do you like doing in your free time?

I like hearing music, dancing Salsa with my friends and watching movies. Furthermore it is always a lot of fun for me to discuss various topics with other people, to practise yoga and to play theatre.

4. Do you have a role model?

My role model is my mother Natalia Salazar. She is an active promoter in our neighborhood and taught me and my friends many things about gender equality, human rights and child rights. She is a very good example for how to fight for a decent life.

5. Why do you work on children's rights?

In my organization we believe that the most vulnerable people in our society are women, girls and boys. Their human rights are violated the most. Due to this my youth group especially fights for the rights of children and adolescents. We organize informative workshops, discussions, events and theatre performances.

6. How are you organised?

I work in different networks. Mostly I am committed in the »United Movement of Children and youth for our rights«, a coalition of organizations in the Southwest of Colombia. In this region we have a great variety of cultures - there are Afro-Colombians, indigenes, farmers and city dwellers. This way I learn that there are similar and different realities than mine in other parts of the country. Furthermore we organize events across the country. On the South American level I am part of the Youth Network South America where I have been involved in several meetings, such as the Earth Summit Rio +20.
