Afghanistan: Aid for flood victims
The province of Baghlan in northern Afghanistan was struck by a devastating flood on May 10, 2024. According to official reports, more than 300 people died and over 1,000 were injured. Three thousand houses, built of mud and stone, were destroyed. Farmland was devastated and livestock was lost. Approximately 600,000 people, half of them children, were affected by the flood and are in dire need of humanitarian aid. They are especially lacking in food, cooking utensils, and protection from the cold.
Terre des Hommes has provided its local partner organization MAPWO (Movement Against Women's Poverty) with €30,000 to help the flood victims: 150 families will receive a tarpaulin and three blankets to protect themselves from the cold. 600 children will receive food parcels, and 150 families will be provided with cooking utensils, including a small gas cylinder, because the flood destroyed their homes.
Which families receive the aid supplies is determined by MAPWO staff in consultation with the village communities. Priority is given to homeless people, female-headed households, families with young children, elderly people, and people with disabilities.
