Working children publish their demands

Dialogue Works campaign gives working children and young people a platform for a powerful, collective voice that demands to be heard in international politics. The campaign was initiated by Terre des Hommes and Kindernothilfe (Child Aid). It is financially supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

More than 30 teams of working children from around the world are now collaborating on the campaign. In January 2023, they organized the "Global Conference of Working Children and Young People" in Kigali, Rwanda. Sixty-three children and young people from 16 countries shared their experiences and aspirations, discussed various topics, participated in workshops, and engaged in creative activities.

The Kigali Declaration

The highlight of the conference was the adoption of the Kigali Declaration. In it, working children demand that politicians make decisions that are more realistic and context-specific than those made so far, and that take into account and improve the living conditions of working children. In particular, they demand:

  1. Effective measures to combat poverty , in particular ensuring decent jobs so that basic needs can be met,
  2. To treat education
  3. To protect children from exploitation and poor working conditions and to enable them to have appropriate and dignified work alongside attending school,
  4. involve children in laws and decisions that affect them , to listen to them and to include their point of view,
  5. protection from violence and discrimination.

The children will now discuss these demands intensively with decision-makers in their respective political environments and work towards their implementation.
