The peace work of Terre des Hommes
The most important principles of a culture of peace are nonviolence, tolerance, nonviolent, peaceful conflict resolution, nonviolent education, and the human right to conscientious objection. These principles are conveyed through peace education for children, young people, and adults. Terre des Hommes rejects armed violence, rearmament, and the militarization of society and youth. Instead, it advocates disarmament, dialogue, and diplomatic conflict resolution.
The 2-page Aide-Mémoire “Human Right to Peace” (Oct. 25) contains positions and demands on the topic of a culture of peace and their legal background.
Terre des Hommes has defined "peace culture" as follows: "A culture of peace consists of a set of values, attitudes, behaviors, and ways of life that reject violence and address conflicts at their root causes, solving problems through dialogue and negotiation between individuals, groups, and nations."
The commitment to peace and the end of war is the founding theme of Terre des Hommes Germany, which was founded as a citizens' movement in 1967 during the Vietnam War. Since then, Terre des Hommes an active part of the German and international peace movement.
The commitment to peace and non-violent conflict resolution is enshrined in the statutes of Terre des Hommes Germany and its strategic goals. Terre des Hommes supports numerous projects in all its project regions in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe and works with its partner organizations to achieve these goals through lobbying, campaigns, and public relations work – at the local, regional, and international levels.
