Millions of children worldwide don't go to school: because they have to work, are refugees, or live in conflict zones. With your help, we ensure that children around the world receive an education – whether in daycare, school, or through vocational training. But learning is more than that: peace education, children's rights, and environmental education are equally important skills that we impart to young people.

Education - Data and Facts
Education for all!
All children have a right to education: This is stated in Article 28 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. Yet millions of children worldwide still cannot go to school. They have to work, the nearest school is too far away, or they are refugees.
- 773 million people worldwide are illiterate, of which around 60 percent are girls and women.
- 64 million primary school children (ages 6 to 11) and 195 million young people (ages 12 to 17) do not attend school.
- One third of all children worldwide who do not attend school live in conflict regions.
Girls are particularly disadvantaged: they often have to help with housework and look after their siblings. School attendance is considered unnecessary for them far more often than for boys, for example, because they are expected to marry young. Without education, they lack the foundation for a self-determined and independent life.
Our educational projects
Through our projects, we ensure that children attend school and kindergarten and that young people receive vocational training. Learning is more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic: peace education, children's rights, and environmental education are equally important components of our projects. For children who are refugees or living in war zones, education must do even more: it must restore their trust in people and help them find their place in the world.
Global Learning
Terre des Hommes not only supports educational projects in poorer countries, but is also committed to global learning in Germany. This approach combines intercultural education, peace and environmental education, human rights education, and sustainable development. Through global learning, we promote a holistic understanding of education and development.
