Sexual violence on children is a crime

Definition: Sexual violence on children is given if individuals or several people in girls or boys under the age of 18 carry out sexualized actions for their own sexual satisfaction. This includes sexual intercourse, demonstrating pornographic materials, exhibitionism, undesirable touch and comments about the genital area. The perpetrator uses his position of power and authority. The commercial sexual exploitation of children is done in sex tourism, for pornographies and in childhood.

Right to protection against sexual abuse

According to Article 34 of the UN Convention on Children's Rights, all contracting states have undertaken to protect children from all forms of sexual exploitation and sexual abuse. For this purpose, the states must take suitable measures to prevent children from

  • to be tempted or forced to participate in illegal sexual acts
  • can be exploited for prostitution or other illegal practices
  • can be exploited for pornographic performances and representations.


Causes and backgrounds

Girls and boys become mostly in the family or socially close environment of victims of sexual violence - this is the case in Germany as well as in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Patriarchal and authoritarian systems as well as breaking social and economic structures and wars favor this child rights violation.


Pay

  • Around 150 million girls and 73 million boys under the age of 18 are victims of sexual violence every year.
  • An estimated 1.8 million children are forced to prostitution and pornography every year.
  • According to estimates, sales with child prostitution and child pornography are six billion euros.
  • Around 50,000 regular consumers of child pornography are estimated in Germany alone.
  • More than 13,000 cases of sexual abuse of minors are reported annually in Germany.

Demands and goals

Sexual violence on children is a crime - worldwide. Therefore, Terre des Hommes demands:

  • not only to ratify the international agreements for the protection of children, but also to implement them without reservations.
  • Cross -border strategies to combat these crimes.
  • the establishment of central contact points or hotlines in the rice countries that receive references to sexual violence on minors.
  • The judicial discretion of the legal authorization for parents who have sexually exploited their children and who have been condemned.
  • Information and education for educators about the dangers of the Internet.

What you can do

  • Be attentive while you are traveling abroad. Find out your message, the police or the tour guide on site as soon as you come across activities that are related to sexual exploitation of children.
  • Pay attention to websites and advertisements in newspapers and magazines at home and abroad that represent the sexual exploitation of children in connection with tourism or advertise. Report all the observations of the local police and your message.
  • When booking your trip, find out whether it is a reputable travel provider who expressly speaks against the exploitation of children in tourism.
  • Help create a problem awareness of the topic of sexual exploitation of children in tourism. Talk to friends, in the circle of colleagues, in groups and clubs, especially during travel time.
