Afghanistan: Combating hunger and exploitation

Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. Millions of children suffer from hunger, exploitation, and a lack of educational opportunities; child labor is widespread. Many aid organizations discontinued their projects after the Taliban seized power, Terre des Hommes remained. With your help, we provide education and training for children, combat child labor, and deliver emergency aid.

Children in Afghanistan: Hunger, child labor and lack of education

In Afghanistan, millions of children suffer from hunger, exploitation, and a lack of educational opportunities. Girls are particularly affected – almost half of them do not attend school. Many parents are forced to send their children to work instead of to school. Healthcare is catastrophic.

From the seventh grade onwards, girls are no longer allowed to go to school, girls are forced into marriage, and women are not allowed to move freely without male accompaniment.

Our local projects

Terre des Hommes and its partner organizations on the ground continue their work for women and children in Afghanistan. They negotiate with local authorities to create as much freedom as possible and ensure support. Despite all the limitations, we are thus able to reduce child labor, provide education for girls, and combat hunger.

Aid along the escape routes

Afghanistan is one of the main countries of origin for asylum seekers worldwide. Young people in particular flee to Europe every day. Through our projects, we help Afghan children in neighboring countries, along their migration routes, and after their arrival in Europe.
