Afghanistan: Work ban for women in NGOs

Terre des Hommes is deeply concerned about the Taliban's decisions to enforce a ban on female employees of national and international non-governmental organizations working for them.

Women play a crucial role in the humanitarian aid provided by our partner organizations, ensuring that vulnerable women and their children have access to assistance while respecting traditional and religious customs. Many of the women employed by our partner organizations offer specific support for women and girls that can only be provided by female staff in NGOs.

The exclusion of women will have a massive impact on food distribution, healthcare, basic and vocational education, and securing families' livelihoods. Hunger, disease, and the lack of schooling and vocational training will further worsen the already critical situation for the people of Afghanistan.

Serious violation of fundamental rights

The exclusion of women from working for non-governmental organizations constitutes a serious violation of the fundamental rights of Afghan women and humanitarian principles, and jeopardizes the vital services provided to those affected. For this reason, all actors in Afghan and international civil society reject any discrimination based on religion, age, gender, or minority status.

Under these conditions, we and our partner organizations cannot adequately implement and continue our work. Yet the people of Afghanistan need our support more than ever. Together with other international and national organizations, we are calling on the Taliban to reverse the exclusion of women. Until then, our humanitarian aid efforts will be significantly reduced or suspended entirely.
