"I almost never leave our hiding place."
While thousands of local staff and human rights activists in Afghanistan live in fear, the German government plans to cut funding for the resettlement program. A women's rights activist, who must remain anonymous, spoke to us about her dramatic situation on the ground.
You are currently in hiding and living under very difficult conditions. What is your current situation?
The situation is extremely stressful. I left my home and am living in a secret location to protect myself and my family from the Taliban. As a women's rights activist, I have been a strong advocate for women who have suffered violence, and that has made me a target.
What security measures have you taken to protect yourself?
I've moved house, changed my phone number, and almost never leave our hiding place. We know the Taliban have a network in the city aimed at finding and arresting activists.
What made you hide from the Taliban?
There are several reasons. Before the Taliban took power, I supported women suffering from violence, often at the hands of relatives who were Taliban members. After the Taliban seized control, they specifically targeted me and my family. Furthermore, there are many reports of the Taliban's mistreatment of women's rights activists, which deeply concern me.
What did you do for women's rights before the Taliban took power?
I was active in various programs to protect children and women from violence and promote their rights. These included awareness campaigns against the recruitment of child soldiers by the Taliban and support for women in need.
The German government plans to reduce the resettlement program for at-risk Afghans. What do you think about that?
That would be a catastrophe. Reducing the program could mean fewer people are rescued from Afghanistan and embolden the Taliban to further intensify their repression. It is crucial that Germany maintains its support.
What do you wish for from the people in Germany?
I urge the people and the government in Germany to take seriously the media reports about the situation of women's rights activists and women in Taliban prisons. Their support is our only hope for safety and a more just world.
