Chile: Influencing politics, enforcing children's rights
In Chile, there is recurring and severe police repression against young people. Those particularly affected are members of ethnic minorities, but also members of youth organizations such as the student movement. To this day, the South American country has not aligned its child and youth legislation with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which, for example, guarantees protection against discrimination. For 28 years, the organization La Caleta has been caring for children and young people in the slums of the capital, Santiago, and the southern port city of Lota. terre des hommes supports La Caleta in its efforts to persuade society and politicians to enshrine children's and youth rights in Chilean legislation.
La Caleta develops projects with children and young people to strengthen children's rights in Chile. In recent years, a "Movement for the Children of Chile" was launched, and 400 projects and organizations, including La Caleta, are participating in its campaign for a new children's and youth law. The children and young people of La Caleta have developed and submitted proposals for the law on issues that affect them and their lives. For example, they succeeded in establishing a regularly meeting working group on children and young people in parliament. A representative from La Caleta also participates in this group, allowing the organization to directly influence decisions. This requires maintaining contacts with decision-makers, also to ensure the progress achieved. Furthermore, the children and young people are contributing to the alternative report of the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the negative impacts of mega-projects on children's rights. They hope this will prompt the Committee on the Rights of the Child to address the issue and call on the Chilean state to fulfill its responsibilities.
