Devastating flash floods in Nepal

Terre des Hommes is providing €30,000 in immediate aid

Osnabrück/Berlin, August 27, 2026 – Following a massive flash flood in the border region between Nepal and Tibet, the humanitarian situation has dramatically worsened. The Nepalese government has officially declared the affected region a crisis zone. According to preliminary reports, at least 190 people have died, and more than 1,300 are still missing. Entire villages have been destroyed by mudslides and debris, affecting at least 10,000 households. The exact causes of the flash flood are still under investigation.

Difficult rescue operations and acute supply shortages

Local partner organizations of Terre des Hommes are on the ground. Initial needs assessments show that people urgently require safe shelter, food, and clean drinking water. Basic medical care is equally essential to treat the injured and contain the spread of disease. In addition, vital humanitarian aid such as blankets and hygiene products must be distributed.

First aid package provided

To ensure immediate emergency aid Terre des Hommes has allocated an initial emergency budget of €30,000. This will primarily fund emergency shelter, basic medical care, and food for the affected population. The situation is particularly dire for children who have been separated from their parents or have lost family members. In addition to losing their homes and basic necessities, they face significant long-term health and psychological harm in unsafe emergency camps.

“Children bear an unimaginable burden in disasters like this,” explains Joshua Hofert, spokesperson for the board of Terre des Hommes . “Many of them are in shock, have lost their families, and are spending their nights outdoors. Our partners are working tirelessly to reach even remote locations. However, given the scale of the disaster, the resources mobilized so far will not be sufficient to guarantee the long-term care and protection of the children and the families most affected.”
