Seventeen-year-old Shirley Mandemba lives in southern Mozambique. She used to simply walk to school. Now she thinks about every step to make sure she arrives safely.
The reason: Heavy rainfall has destroyed the paths. The ground is cracking open, paths are sinking into mud. Bridges are being washed away. This makes the way to school life-threatening.

Education begins with a safe route to school
Shirley's friend Damaia fell on a muddy section of the path. Since then, she can only walk with crutches and often misses class.
More and more children are losing access to education. They want to learn – but the journey to school is dangerous.
Together with our partner organization “KUWUKA JDA”, we empower local children and young people. In environmental clubs, they come together, document dangerous and damaged routes to school, and initiate concrete improvements. Shirley and other children experience for the first time: Our voices matter.

So that change grows, which lasts
The programs already reach over 11,500 people in Mozambique, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. More than 2,000 children and young people participate directly.
But behind these numbers lie real changes: children are returning to school, staying in class, and not giving up – even when the path is difficult. Many are sharing their knowledge with others, in families, schools, and communities.

To ensure that children and young people can get to school safely again, they need your support.
