Places where children feel safe

East Jerusalem: Safe places for preschool children

In an environment of insecurity and violence Terre des Hommes creates learning and play spaces where children can find peace, security and joy.

Checkpoints, military presence, restricted freedom, and increasing violence are taking a toll on the daily lives of children in East Jerusalem. Classes are frequently canceled, schools often operate remotely, and many children drop out of school.

Since 2023, political tensions in East Jerusalem have intensified: children increasingly experience violence and military confrontations as part of their daily lives. They live in constant insecurity and are therefore exposed to a growing risk of exploitation, trauma, and social exclusion. Preschool children, in particular, need safe places where they can simply be children and reliable caregivers for a stable start in life and learning.

Terre des Hommes Germany, together with Terre des Hommes Italy and Palestinian authorities, is working in three kindergartens in East Jerusalem to create safe spaces for girls and boys and to give them a good start to their schooling. The premises have been renovated and equipped with child-friendly furniture, learning materials, and play equipment. The outdoor areas have also been redesigned so that the children can play safely and move around freely.

Music and movement-based educational activities help children process feelings and traumatic experiences. Speech and occupational therapists also work in the groups,  supporting the children in developing their vocabulary, communication skills, and fine motor skills.

These learning and play spaces focus on children's rights, participation, inclusion, and a trauma-sensitive approach. To meet these goals, educators receive further training and develop appropriate materials together with experts.

The project builds on the long-standing work of Terre des Hommes Italy in East Jerusalem since 2012 and is being implemented in close cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Education. It creates safe and supportive learning environments where every child is seen and can develop.
