Don't cut solidarity to the bone! – Strengthen international aid! Petition with 100,000 signatures submitted to the Bundestag
Yesterday, Terre des Hommes together with 16 other organizations, presented the petition "Petition: Don't cut solidarity! – Strengthen international aid!" with approximately 100,000 signatures to representatives of the SPD and CDU/CSU parliamentary groups. On behalf of the SPD, parliamentary group leader Matthias Miersch and committee members Sanae Abdi and Siemtje Möller accepted the signatures, while on behalf of the CDU/CSU, deputy parliamentary group leader Klaus Mack and Thomas Rachel from the Committee on Economic Cooperation and Development accepted them.
The occasion is the debate on the 2027 draft budget beginning this week in the Bundestag – the deliberations on the BMZ budget are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. According to current plans, the budget of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is to be reduced by a further 600 million euros. The already drastically cut funds for humanitarian aid are to remain at around one billion euros – no adjustment is currently planned.
The participating organizations warn that short-sighted austerity measures endanger lives, health, and future opportunities. The members of parliament promised to take the petition's message into account during the budget negotiations.
