Together for family reunification
The new German government plans to suspend family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection for two years. In concrete terms, this means that many refugee children, young people, and their families would have to live apart for even longer – often for years, without knowing when they will see each other again.
With the "A Heart for Families" campaign, we, together with Pro Asyl and the Federal Association for Minors and Refugees, are sending a strong message against these plans. Our goal: to prevent the suspension of family reunification and to protect the rights of children and families.

When people flee to Germany, they often leave everything behind – including their closest relatives. But not all refugees have the same rights: Those recognized as refugees in Germany generally have a right to family reunification. People who receive so-called subsidiary protection – because they face serious danger from war, torture, or the death penalty in their country of origin, but individual persecution cannot be proven – have only limited options for bringing their families to Germany. Even now, family reunification for this group is heavily regulated and involves long waiting times.
The German government is planning to completely suspend family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection for another two years. This means that thousands of families already separated would have to wait even longer for a reunion – without knowing when or if they will ever be reunited. For those affected, this is an enormous burden: the uncertainty, the worry for their loved ones, and living in constant fear for their safety make settling in Germany extremely difficult.
The planned suspension would close off one of the few legal and safe avenues for families to reunite for a long time. This will hit children and young people particularly hard, as they depend on the protection and security of their families. Suspending family reunification contradicts the right to family life and the best interests of the child.
Rally on June 26th in Berlin
On June 27th, the Bundestag plans to decide on the suspension of family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection. A demonstration against this will take place on the lawn in front of the Bundestag.
