The street is no home for children

Mexico: Protection and help for former street children

Domestic violence, poverty, neglect: there are many reasons why children in Puebla end up on the streets. Children from poor families who are forced to drop out of school and work on the streets to support their families are also at high risk of falling into a cycle of drugs, violence, and exploitation. A way out is almost impossible without help.

The organization Juconi ("Fundación Junto con los Niños") has been supported by Terre des Hommes in cooperation with the Volkswagen Group Works Council since 2001. Juconi runs two residential homes and a day center for former street children and working children. Juconi implements various programs for these children, supporting approximately 350 children and their families each year. Most of them are approached at the market, where many work. Located directly at the market is a day center where the children receive academic tutoring during their free time. This helps them reintegrate into regular schooling and gives them a long-term chance to escape the cycle of poverty.

Street children find refuge in Juconi's other facilities. A particular focus of their work is trauma-informed therapy for children and their families. Many of the children struggle with drug addiction, have been forced into prostitution, or have experienced physical, psychological, or sexual violence. Juconi's trauma specialists provide support for up to three years to help them regain a sense of hope for the future.
