A sudden flash flood has swept away entire villages in the border region between Nepal and Tibet. More than 1,100 people have died, and thousands remain missing. Children and families have lost their homes and now need food, medical care, and safe shelter. Terre des Hommes has provided €30,000 in emergency aid, but the need is much greater.

A tidal wave without warning
The situation on the ground remains unclear. Some villages are barely accessible due to the mudslides, and the exact cause of the flood has not yet been officially confirmed.
On August 26, 2026, at approximately 9:00 AM local time, a sudden and severe flash flood struck the border region between Nepal and China. The floodwaters originated on the Tibetan side via the Bhotekoshi River and spread along the Trishuli River as far as Mugling. The suspected cause is a glacial lake outburst flood, in which a glacial lake suddenly empties in the form of a flood wave – however, this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Nepal has declared the affected areas of Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and Chitwan crisis zones for an initial period of three months and has deployed the army and helicopters for rescue operations.

Emergency Kits are emergency aid packages for particularly affected households. They supplement general basic supplies with two targeted protective measures for children and families: Emergency Infant Kits for infants and toddlers, and Emergency Household Energy Kits for families in particularly dire need. The Infant Kits ensure the immediate supply of food, hygiene, and care items for children. Since many homes have been destroyed, the Energy Kits restore access to cooking, light, and communication.
Depending on the age group, Emergency Infant Kits contain items such as infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, and blankets. 2,000 kits for households with children under two years old are being distributed in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading.
Emergency Household Energy Kits include portable cookers, solar lamps, charging equipment, and power banks. 1,000 kits will be distributed to particularly affected households, with priority given to families with children.
