On World Refugee Day, June 20, Joshua Hofert, spokesperson for the board of terre des hommes stated:
Osnabrück, June 19, 2023 – “ According to the latest data from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the number of refugees has reached an all-time high of over 108 million. Around 40 million of these refugees are children under 18. As an international children's rights organization, we support numerous projects for refugees, for example in the Sahel, the Middle East, and South Asia, but also in Germany. To sustainably improve the framework for our work, we expect the German government to do more to combat the root causes of displacement, such as armed conflicts and droughts, extreme weather events, and hunger as consequences of climate change. This also means that there must be no budget cuts to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and the Federal Foreign Office, but rather that sufficient funds must be permanently available for development cooperation and humanitarian aid. Furthermore, aid that truly bears the word 'humanitarian' in its name must immediately withdraw the planned reforms to the European asylum system and instead develop it on the basis of internationally agreed human and children's rights.”
