Osnabrück/Berlin, June 27, 2025 – On the occasion of the Bundestag's approval of the suspension of family reunification, Joshua Hofert, spokesperson for the board of Terre des Hommes , stated:
“By suspending family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection, the German government is abandoning children and their families. Ali from Syria, who has been waiting for three years for his wife and two daughters to join him, tells us: ‘My daughters often say, “Dad, we miss you, we want to hug you.” I can only remain silent because I have no answer. Now I hardly dare to tell my family the bad news about the suspension of family reunification.’”
Family reunification remains legally mandated, makes sense from an integration policy perspective, and is a humanitarian necessity: Therefore, we will continue to remind the Federal Government of its human rights obligations in the coming months and work together with those affected to ensure that the right to family is upheld.
Families belong together! (See press release of June 26, 2025)
