Young refugees protest at the Conference of Interior Ministers for admission and the right to stay

Osnabrück, May 30, 2022 – Parallel to the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) in Würzburg, a conference of young refugees, supported by terre des hommes , will take place from June 1 to 3. Together with its partner organization "Youth Without Borders" and a broad alliance of refugee and human rights organizations terre des hommes is calling for the demonstration "Right to Stay and Acceptance Now!"

  • Press conference on June 2nd, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic University Community of Würzburg
  • Demonstration on June 2nd, 2022 at 4:30 pm from the main train station to the IMK conference venue

The IMK faces a number of pressing issues that need to be resolved, including the reception of refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine and the implementation of the improvements to asylum law decided by the traffic light coalition, in particular the regulations on the right to remain for long-term tolerated refugees.

#DontForgetAfghanistan: Don't abandon the people of Afghanistan!
The German government is abandoning the people of Afghanistan. Many of them, including project staff from terre des hommes who have worked for the rights of children and women, have been in mortal danger since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021. Even people who have worked for German organizations or the German Armed Forces and are therefore persecuted by the Taliban often have no chance of being admitted to Germany. We therefore demand federal and state admission programs, the rapid admission of particularly vulnerable and at-risk Afghans, a reform and acceleration of the local staffing procedure, and the consideration of all at-risk family members in the admission process.

#RightToStayNow: End the fear of tolerated stay!
We are committed to ensuring that the German government finally opens up prospects for all children, young people, and adults with tolerated stay status and implements the right-to-stay regulations agreed upon in the coalition agreement generously and promptly. 242,000 refugees live in Germany with the precarious status of tolerated stay, the majority of them for many years. Most have fled from Iraq, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Iran, or Russian republics like Chechnya. Their daily lives are characterized by a lack of prospects, fear of deportation, and the restriction of social rights. We therefore demand a general moratorium on deportations from the Conference of Interior Ministers (IMK) to ensure that people are not deported before the new right-to-stay law is passed in the Bundestag.
