Emergency aid for the victims of Typhoon Yagi in Southeast Asia
On September 7th, Typhoon Yagi devastated many countries in Southeast Asia, including Thailand and Myanmar. The typhoon is considered one of the strongest storms of the last 30 years.
Myanmar has been particularly hard hit. Fifty-nine communities were flooded, and many of these areas are still underwater. An estimated 630,000 people have been affected by the floods, hundreds have died, and many are missing. For the people of Myanmar, who are already suffering from bombings and armed conflict following the military coup, this is a devastating blow. Large parts of the infrastructure have been destroyed: houses, schools, water pipes, and communication networks, which is hindering the coordination of relief efforts. In Thailand, the typhoon triggered flash floods and landslides, primarily in the north of the country. More than 50,000 households have been affected, especially in Mae Hong Son province along the Salween River. Many residents were caught off guard and had to abandon their belongings and livestock. The current situation is particularly difficult for children. Many are at risk of disease and malnutrition and are in need of food and hygiene supplies.
Clean drinking water is in dire need, as water from many wells and rivers is no longer safe to drink. There are also shortages of food and medical supplies. Fuel, emergency shelter, and clothing are also urgently needed. Furthermore, building materials are lacking to quickly repair structures such as houses and schools.
Emergency relief efforts have begun
Terre des Hommes supports relief efforts through several local partner organizations. In Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Thailand, we are supporting the reconstruction of homes and schools, distributing food parcels containing rice, oil, beans, and salt. In Mae Hong Son, TDH is helping people repair their homes and farmland, and is also distributing school supplies and food. In Myanmar, the most affected families are receiving food parcels and hygiene items such as soap, detergents, and disinfectants.
