One year after the earthquake:
A better future for children in Syria and Turkey
On February 6, 2023, a devastating earthquake shook the southeast of Türkiye and the north of Syria. More than 59,000 people died, 125,000 were injured. Millions of people became homeless.
Together with partner organizations on site, Terre des Hommes urgently needed help on both sides of the border. Also thanks to the great sympathy in Germany. Around one million euros came together for relief supplies and emergency help: tents and emergency accommodation, food and drinking water, blankets, warm clothing, baby food, diapers, hygiene articles, medication.
In the weeks and months after the catastrophe, this support has never been demolished. Terre des Hommes has now built up seven projects in northern Syria and in the Kurdish areas of the Southeast Turkey, has already been able to help more than 20,000 people and will continue to help them to deal with the disaster in the future. Because even today, the consequences of earthquake are far from overcome. Especially for socially disadvantaged children and families, the quake has often worsened an already precarious life situation.
In 2024, Terre des Hommes will therefore continue to work for you: for children who need psychosocial or legal support. For a sustainable improvement in the living conditions of disadvantaged groups. And for fair opportunities for a better future, for all children in the project regions - in and around Gazantep, Adıyaman, Kayseri, Hatay, Aleppo and Hama.
