We set up a stall in the pedestrian zone, rain or shine. There, we provide information about current children's rights issues and collect signatures or donations.
There's a wealth of topics to choose from: sometimes it's about the need to abolish exploitative child labor. Other times, it's about the fact that the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which has existed for 35 years, enshrines children's rights, but unfortunately, these rights are still not respected and implemented worldwide. We also raise awareness among the citizens of Aachen about "Fair Trade" and its connection to children's rights, as well as the situation of street children.
We particularly enjoy school projects. We regularly collaborate with teachers to explore specific topics with a class, for example, on the occasion of "Red Hand Day," the international day against the use of child soldiers. Depending on the children's age, the topics might include child labor, child prostitution, or children's rights in general.
We have also organized interesting exhibitions with fascinating guests, including on the topic of "Children on the Run."
As a member of the One World Forum Aachen, we collaborate closely with other groups on specific issues.
Interfere
There are numerous things we cannot or will not accept. Whenever this happens, we intervene! A few examples from the past: Carpets bearing the Rugmark seal – which certifies that these carpets were produced without child labor – were stored in Germany, yet Aachen retailers refused to offer them. Arms companies exported landmines to conflict zones; German sex tourists who abuse children were not prosecuted in Germany, etc.
In such cases of injustice, we have successfully intervened together with other Terre des Hommesgroups and will continue to do so. We do this locally by putting pressure on retailers, by writing to elected officials, through petitions, and by issuing statements in the press. We can make a difference!
Collecting money
To raise money for children in need, we organize events such as book fairs, art auctions, benefit concerts, and even "street music for street children."
Our goal: to raise as much money as possible for Terre des Hommesprojects worldwide. We have also placed collection boxes in various doctors' offices in Aachen. Regular donors are especially important in ensuring that Terre des Hommes can reliably support its projects. These regular donors are vital.
