Parliamentary breakfast on the CEAS
Terre des Hommes was in the Bundestag: Together with seven other organizations, we hosted a "parliamentary breakfast." The occasion: The German government has decided to implement the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) into national law. The CEAS is intended to limit migration within the EU. The Bundesrat and Bundestag have yet to discuss and vote on the drafts. However, the implementation of the CEAS in Germany threatens serious violations of children's rights for refugee children. The goal of the well-attended parliamentary breakfast was to inform the members of parliament about the consequences and to engage in dialogue with them.
Our most important demands
- Detention in the context of migration is incompatible with the best interests of the child and must be prohibited by law.
- Children also don't belong in detention-like facilities. For them, it makes no difference whether it's legally detention or detention-like accommodation – what matters is their lived experience. Accommodations that restrict freedom are no place for children.
- Special protection needs must be identified early and bindingly in order to ensure appropriate accommodation for children and their families.
Refugee children need quick access to school and education.
