Terre des Hommes in the Bundestag

Parliamentary breakfast on the CEAS

Terre des Hommes was at the Bundestag: Together with seven other organizations, we hosted a "parliamentary breakfast." The occasion: The German government has decided to implement the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) into national law. The CEAS aims to limit migration within the EU. The Bundesrat and Bundestag still need to debate and vote on the draft legislation. However, the implementation of the CEAS in Germany threatens serious violations of the rights of refugee children. The goal of the well-attended parliamentary breakfast was to inform members of parliament about the consequences and to engage in dialogue with them.

Our most important demands

  • Detention in the context of migration is incompatible with the best interests of the child and must be prohibited by law.
  • Children do not belong in prison-like facilities. For them, it makes no difference whether it is legally considered imprisonment or prison-like accommodation – what matters is their lived reality. Restrictive accommodations are no place for children.
  • Special protection needs must be identified early and in a binding manner in order to enable appropriate accommodation for children and their families.
  • Refugee children need quick access to school and education.

The legal background is provided in the expert opinion by Prof. Constantin Hruschka and Robert Nestler.
