The call for equality
In many parts of the world, the rights of girls and women are violated. Child marriage, violence, exclusion from schools or professions – discrimination and oppression have many faces. All the more respect and support are due to young women who take paths to overcome these obstacles – for themselves, for others, and for change in their communities.
Evelyn from Zimbabwe
Evelyn, 22, from Zimbabwe, had just become a mother; her husband was the breadwinner for their young family. But then he became violent. She found help and advice at Musasa: With the support of the women's rights organization, Evelyn dared to make a fresh start professionally in order to live more independently. She built up a small sewing business that now supports her family.
"Women should never lose hope or remain silent. Help is available for them and their families. Building a business, earning money, and being independent – when women finally get this opportunity, they should seize it."
Nasima from Pakistan
Nasima, 18 years old, is involved in the youth organization of the "Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum" together with other young people to ensure that the rights of girls are enforced: For example, the girls receive tips for their career path, they can take computer courses and organize information, cultural and sports events.
"Girls should have the same opportunities as boys! But in my society, education for girls is not considered important. I believe that if I complete my education, that alone would be a great success."
Amelia from Guatemala
Amelia, 19, is a youth leader in the "MAIA" project in Guatemala. Here, one in two indigenous women is illiterate, and only one in five completes secondary school. With MAIA, Amelia is working to combat this inequality: she ensures that more and more indigenous girls have a fair chance at education.
"It makes me very happy that more young women are now going to school and university. I see myself in many of them, and that motivates me to pursue my dreams. Despite all the storms, you have to be resilient and keep going. Because we'll never know if we can make it if we don't try."
