West Bank: Education, protection and safe places for children
In the Al-Amari refugee camp near Ramallah, more than 5,000 children live in extremely cramped conditions. Places to learn and play are scarce. Together with our sister organization Terre des Hommes Italy, we help them to experience childhood and develop their abilities despite these difficult circumstances.
To this end, we are renovating a children's center, the "Palestinian Child Center." Here, children will find a child-friendly, safe place where they can learn, play, and experience community. 130 children will receive remedial instruction to catch up on learning gaps in key school subjects and prepare for their final exams. An additional 60 children with special educational needs will receive targeted support.
Equally important is the children's emotional well-being. Through painting, storytelling, gardening, and playing together, they can express their feelings, make friends, and learn to cope with stress. They discover their strengths, develop their own aspirations, and actively shape their future. Thus, more than just a place of learning is created: The center opens up educational opportunities for children, offers them protection and psychosocial support, and strengthens them in the long term.
Eight-year-old Mohsen is delighted with the offer and already has concrete plans: "Jumping on the trampoline and painting with my parents makes me happy. Later, I want to be a dentist and fit people with braces so they can have beautiful smiles." Thirteen-year-old Jihad also has a clear idea of his future: "I hope that I will become a journalist someday to show the world our suffering as Palestinians."
