Zambia and Zimbabwe: Climate-resilient agriculture for families

Every Terre des Hommes project is designed to have a lasting impact and sustainably improve people's lives. The project in Zambia and Zimbabwe demonstrates how this is achieved.

For over three years, the people of Lower Gweru (Zimbabwe) and Kazungula (Zambia) have been suffering from extreme drought. Harvests have failed, food prices are rising – many families are dependent on external aid. But there is hope: young people and young adults are involved in projects run by our partner organizations Environment Africa (EA) and MASO to sustainably improve nutrition and life in their communities.

With support from EA and MASO, they are establishing eco-clubs and cooperatives. They receive start-up capital to create their own climate-resilient plots, which then serve as models for others. New sources of income such as mushroom cultivation or poultry farming are emerging, school and hospital gardens are being established – and climate-friendly agriculture is now even an integral part of the school curriculum.

The commitment to a healthy environment quickly shows results: The communities were able to increase their crop yields and improve nutrition, generate more income and expand their knowledge of cultivation methods and climate change.

“Since the MASO training, my community sees me differently. I created a plot of land at home, and many neighbors wanted to learn about the new practices. Some have already adopted them and see that they work.”
