A good life – who wouldn't want that?
Indeed, the economic and social model of industrialized countries has created prosperity in many nations and enabled many people to live a "good life." But this economic system is now largely responsible for global environmental crises, poverty, and inequality.
Children suffer the most. For Terre des Hommes therefore, the question is also what a sustainable development can look like that enables a good life for all and ensures that children's and human rights are upheld.
What economic and development concepts can we use to achieve these goals? What practical project approaches already exist? The traveling exhibition "The Good Life for All!" explores these questions.
This was developed by the volunteer working group "Alternative Development" of Terre des Hommes .
We want to contribute to the discourse on a sustainable socio-ecological transformation, focusing on young people and future generations.
The working group “Alternative Development” has therefore examined various alternative development concepts, which are
- the post-growth debate in the global North
- the Buen Vivir concept from the Andean region
- the African discussion under the keyword Ubuntu,
- the discussion in India under the heading Radical Ecological Democracy (RED)
It turns out that there is no single "blueprint" for sustainable, future-proof change! But by engaging with these concepts, we can identify guiding principles for a world of humanity and a good life for all. The following six core elements, in particular, define a sustainable society:
- Ecological integrity of our planet and intergenerational justice
- Solidarity and cooperation (national and international)
- Gender equality
- Economic justice, cultural diversity, and learning from each other
- Democratization, participation and responsibility
Conclusions
What conclusions can be drawn from this for development cooperation and the self-image of Terre Des Hommes ?
On 12 panels, we offer suggestions on the question of the good life and the meaning of "development" (T2-3); on the role of civil society (T4); on transformation approaches from the South and North (T5-6); on core elements of a livable future (T7); on examples from project work (T8-11) and the working methods of Terre Des Hommes (T12).
The exhibition is based on the position paper “Dare to transform – for an Earth of humanity”, which was adopted by the DK 2023 and the MV 2023.

A good life – who wouldn't want that? A good life for all people – wouldn't that be wonderful? Unfortunately, this goal seems more unattainable than ever! Children, in particular, suffer the most from the numerous crises and wars, and not only is their future at risk, but the survival of all humanity is also at stake.
In its statutes Terre des Hommes has committed itself to protecting children from exploitation and to promoting peaceful, socially sustainable and environmentally sound development worldwide.
Against this backdrop, Terre des Hommes must ask itself (more urgently than ever) what a sustainable future could look like that enables a good life for all. A future in which children's and human rights can be realized! What contribution does its program and advocacy work already make to this? Do we perhaps need to set new priorities?
The initial question is whether innovative technologies and "green growth" offer a way out. Can they prevent ecological exploitation? Are there perhaps other, alternative approaches that differ from the destructive growth and prosperity model of rich countries?
