Chile: Free kindergartens in the slums of Santiago

In the impoverished outskirts of Chile's capital, Santiago, known as poblaciones, the Red CEC* kindergartens are havens of safety and trust. Amidst violent crime and drug trafficking, they fight for peace, environmental protection, and community. We spoke with Rosani Lagos and Valentina Campos, who run the Red CEC kindergarten in the La Victoria población.

No place for children

One in three asylum applications in 2024 came from a child or young person – the previous year the figure was even higher. They are fleeing war, violence, and poverty, and they need protection. But in Germany, they often face a lack of prospects: cramped accommodations, a daily life full of uncertainty, and a lack of support. Stricter asylum laws are exacerbating the situation.

The upcoming implementation of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) reform threatens further, far-reaching restrictions, including the risk of detention or placement in prison-like conditions, even for children. This must be prevented at all costs.

Studies show that the inadequate reception system hinders integration and violates children's rights. Terre des Hommes makes the perspectives of children and young people visible and stands by their side, together with partner organizations, to achieve improvements.

More on this

Human rights apply everywhere.

On Human Rights Day, December 10th: We demand protection and support for children in war zones and crisis areas. The world is currently facing a multitude of armed conflicts, the likes of which have not been seen since the Second World War. Of particular concern is the sharp increase in civilian casualties in recent years; the approximately 520 million children worldwide who are growing up in war zones and crisis areas are especially vulnerable.

Arrived, but not safe?

The report by Terre des Hommes , in cooperation with the Federal Association of Psychosocial Centers for Refugees and Victims of Torture (BAfF eV), documents the consequences of violence against refugee children for their mental health, their rights, and their participation in Germany. The report provides practical recommendations, particularly for educational and social workers, and offers valuable background information to enable collaborative efforts to improve the safety, protection, and participation of refugee children.

COP30: Children's rights at the World Climate Conference

At the 30th World Climate Conference #COP30 in Brazil, we campaigned to ensure that the voices of young people were heard.

Together with 60 youth activists from Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America, we have developed demands this year that focus on children's rights, protection, participation and fair financing of, for example, local youth work.

The demands at a glance

Terre des Hommes Day of Action 2025

Nearly 50 million children worldwide are currently refugees – more than at any time since World War II. They are fleeing war, violence, persecution, poverty, or natural disasters. Most children flee within their own country or to neighboring countries. Only a small number come to Europe.

But while more and more children are forced to leave their homes, safe and legal routes of escape are becoming increasingly rare. Instead of offering protection and opportunities, many countries are closing their borders and their hearts.

Return agreements and deportations of Syrian refugees

Following his trip to our projects in Syria, our board member Joshua Hofert warns against destabilizing the country through deportations. The situation is far from normal – many parts of Syria are destroyed, and the infrastructure and education system are overwhelmed.

We demand: Instead of return agreements and deportations of Syrian refugees, the international community must provide stronger support for reconstruction than it has so far.

To the press release

Children's rights organizations are demanding fair climate policies.

The well-being of children must be at the heart of climate policy. This is the demand made by children's rights organizations in Germany to the federal government. It must advocate for this internationally at the 30th UN Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil.

Gaza: Solar wells provide drinking water

Even after the ceasefire, the people in the Gaza Strip are suffering greatly: clean water is scarce, and since the destruction of the only power plant, the energy supply has been severely restricted. Our project involves repairing wells and equipping them with solar panels to power more efficient pumps.

Ukraine

For three years, children in Ukraine have been living with bombings, destruction, suffering, death, and fear. Since Russia expanded its war of aggression to large parts of the country in February 2022, millions of people have sought refuge in the west of the country and in neighboring European states. Together with our partner organizations in Ukraine, we provide emergency and trauma relief, establish schools and shelters, and assist with youth work and the integration of internally displaced persons.

Profit is not more important than human rights!

Today, the German Federal Cabinet approved a draft amendment to the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG). The Federal Government is thus initiating a legislative change that would undermine urgently needed safeguards for children's rights and environmental protection in the supply chains of German companies.

Terre des Hommes warns of violations of children's rights

The German Federal Cabinet is scheduled to approve the draft legislation for implementing the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) in Germany today. Terre des Hommes warns that in the future, children could also be detained or placed in detention-like facilities under certain conditions. Terre des Hommes sees this as a clear violation of children's rights and, together with migration law experts, is urgently calling for improvements in the upcoming parliamentary process.

The German Bundestag approves budget cuts

The German Bundestag is planning cuts to development cooperation and humanitarian aid. This will primarily affect people who urgently need support in war zones and crisis areas. Therefore, we support the appeal from VENRO and ONE.

Regarding the report

Destruction of aid projects in the Gaza Strip

Air strikes have destroyed a soup kitchen and a school co-financed by Terre des Hommes . We condemn these attacks in the strongest possible terms. Despite the destruction and ongoing violence, we will not cease our efforts to support children and families in need.

Regarding the report

Safe access to emergency aid in Gaza - now!

Thousands of people in Gaza risk their lives daily to receive emergency aid – Terre des Hommes and 171 organizations are calling for the protection of the civilian population in a joint appeal.

Regarding the appeal

A heart for families

The German government plans to suspend family reunification for those granted subsidiary protection. This would mean that many refugee families would remain separated indefinitely. With the "A Heart for Families" campaign, we, together with ProAsyl and BUMF, are sending a strong message against this – for the protection of children and the right to family life.
