Terre des hommes: help for Türkiye and Syria
According to official estimates, more than 50,000 people were killed in the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The World Health Organization classifies quake as the most difficult natural disaster in Europe in this century. In order to help the survivor quickly, Terre des Hommes provides a total of 250,000 euros in immediate aid in a first step.
First aid measures in Turkey
Thousands of people in the southeast of Türkiye have lost their members and friends from one moment. They stand in front of the ruins of their houses and need provisional accommodations. Terre des Hommes has made 50,000 euros available and works with local partner organizations who know the situation on site and take care of those affected and the many disturbed and traumatized children. In addition to the material support, it is particularly important that these children not only feel concerns and fears, but can experience some normality again with games, painting and making music:
More than 1,200 families are currently housed in tents in safe zones near their destroyed houses. There you get food, clean drinking water, blankets, warm clothes and other vital relief supplies such as baby food, diapers and medication.
Dramatic supply situation in Syria
Terre des Hommes also provides humanitarian aid in the Syrian cities of Aleppo and Latakia. Millions of Syrian civil war refugees live throughout the region, some of whom have been suffering from civil war for twelve years and are urgently dependent on international help. Terre des Hommes has provided 200,000 euros, including 75,000 euros from the Volkswagen Association Foundation.
Angela Kaspar, CEO of the Volkswagen Working Foundation, explains: »Our thoughts are in the numerous victims and those affected by the disaster in Turkey and Syria. With this donation we want to support humanitarian aid for people in the earthquake areas that are urgently offered. "
With the initiated aid measures, our sister organization Terre des Hommes Italy provides more than 6,000 people with urgently needed blankets and mattresses as well as hygiene articles, lamps and baby supplies in 22 collective accommodations (13 in Latakia, 9 in Aleppo). This is where Vele of them are internal refugees who have been looking for protection against the war in the region. In addition to the distribution of food, medication and warm protective clothing, the possibilities for self -sufficiency should be improved by distributing cash.
Terre des Hommes will further expand emergency aid in Syria and Turkey to help more earthquake victims. For this we urgently ask for donations.
