Strengthen girls and women

Girls are at risk of becoming victims of violence and abuse; Access to education is often denied to them. In some regions of the world there are still practices such as early marriage and genital mutilation. With their support, we promote projects that protect girls, strengthen their self -confidence and enable training. From politics and society we demand the same rights for everyone so that girls can grow up self -determined and without fear.

The long fight against girls rights violations

Terre des Hommes has announced the battle of discrimination against girls and women. We denounce gender -based injuries to children's rights, protect affected children and adolescents we protect strengths and enable them to demand their rights themselves.

Because girls are still forced to be married. Your genitals are mutilated. They are raped, dying from unsafe abortions, are exploited as a labor, sexually abused and sold for this purpose. The list of drastic child rights violations that affect girls in particular is long and shocking. Many girls are married every year, although they are not yet 18 years old. They often live in the man's family and are completely at the mercy: they endure violence and humiliations, have to work from early to late, are forced to fulfill their "marital duties" and become pregnant, even though they are still children themselves. Children's marriage is a topic in almost all Terre of the Hommes projects in India and other countries in which it is widespread. At village meetings and in schools, in youth and women's groups, about public media and other opinion-forming institutions, we indicate the dangers and the right to self-determination of girls.

A lot has already been achieved - after all, the number of women married in childhood has dropped in recent years. But many girls and women die every year because they have to break pregnancy under precarious conditions, because in many countries abortion is still illegal. This is usually not a problem for women with money. They go to an expensive private clinic and can have their pregnancy ended there without major risks. There is no possibility for girls and women from poor conditions. In their despair, they are forced to initiate abortion using life -threatening methods themselves or to go to "angelicists" that help them for little money. Most of the girls and women who let their lives come from Africa.

Genital mutilation, exploitation and sexualized violence

Every year, millions of girls become victims of genital mutilation. Especially in Somalia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Mali, Sudan, Egypt and some other African countries, but also in Indonesia, Yemen or Iraq, the chastity, virginity, purity and loyalty of the woman should be ensured. Circumcision has long been prohibited in most countries. But if you are not circumcised, you often have no chance of finding a husband. Again and again girls die of blood poisoning or too high blood loss. Anyone who survives the procedure often suffers from chronic abdominal inflammation, problems when giving birth or extreme pain, especially during sexual intercourse.

Not only in their own family, girls work much more in the household than boys. Over 70 percent of the approximately ten million children employed in foreign households are girls. Many of them have extremely long working hours and worked under slave -like conditions. They often live far from their home in the house of employers, where they are always tangible and controllable. The risk of becoming victims of exploitation and abuse is high. Both the exploitation of domestic workers and the merciless exploitation of girls in the Indian textile industry has committed Terre des Hommes: young people learn to defend their rights, and alternatives are sought and found in unreasonable employment.

Millions of children are sexually exploited, most of them are girls. Children's prostitution is a lucrative business, overall the profits from forced prostitution far exceed that from all other areas of forced labor. In addition, new possibilities have arisen on the globalized markets connected over the Internet. Several ten thousand children are misused for webcam children's prostitution worldwide. Experts expect the number of children to continue to increase by webcam child prostitution. Because the global demand for perpetrators and access to the cheap Internet even in poor countries further heat the business.
