Children's rights - data and facts
Realize children's rights
Every child has the right to the best possible development, free of cruelty, oppression, exploitation and social hardship. But the reality is sobering. In many parts of the world, children's rights are kicked with feet. Serious grievances such as poverty, hunger, war and increasingly climate change also rob children the bare essentials for a healthy growing up and their future prospects. The causes are man -made and not unchangeable.
Terre des Hommes wants to enable the children of today and tomorrow a dignified life in a fair and peaceful world. That is why we support more than 400 projects in 47 countries that realize children's rights on a small scale and precede them with a good example. Through educational work, campaigns and other forms of influence, we are committed to ensuring that decision -makers in politics, business and society comply with children's rights and take into account in their actions.
The gap between claim and reality is great. But at the same time, she is a request to act in the children's interests. Terre des hommes starts there.
The UN Convention on the Rights of Children
The most important agreement to protect children's rights at the international level is the 1989 UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.
196 countries have joined the UN Convention on the Rights of Children, more than any other human rights contract. The international community is obliged to implement children's rights and to pursue a policy that contributes to the fact that children's rights also come into its own under the conditions of globalization worldwide. Commercial companies also have to exercise their child law, because they influence the life of billions of children - in positive and negative.

Development opportunities of children
Development in the sense of child rights is a holistic concept that aims to promote children's skills, their emotional and social needs as well as their physical and mental health. The task of a child -based "development policy" is to create an environment in which you can optimally develop all children and perceive their rights. To do this, the political, social, economic, cultural and ecological framework must be improved - at local, national and international level.
The development opportunities of children are extremely unevenly distributed today within and between the countries. Many children are disadvantaged due to their origin or gender when accessing education and other forms of basic care. Whether a child lives in poverty or is threatened by climate change often depends on where it is born. The politics and economy of the rich countries massively restrict the development opportunities of people in poorer countries.
Young people are almost always excluded from development policy decisions that affect them. They are increasingly frustrated by the inadequate reaction of politics to climate change and other current and future challenges.
