Children's rights on the agenda

Chile: Media Public for Children's Rights

Chile is considered the prime example of an economically successful state. The country is in 41th place on the UN development index and is therefore better than any other Latin American country. Nevertheless, Chile has major problems in the social area and in terms of human rights. Raices is a small Chilean organization that has been fighting the sexual exploitation of children and adolescents since 1991. The focus is on abolishing commercial sexual exploitation, prostitution and pornography, sex tourism and childhood.

In order to rely on the rights of children and adolescents on the national agenda and to persuade the government to more youth protection, Raices organizes a large media campaign to raise awareness of the public. The organization works closely with 50 journalists and 150 journalism students and trains them on the subject of children's rights. In addition, 400 active children and adolescents are included in the program. The journalists are supposed to criticize the defective child rights legislation in Chile, while the students learn their craft their craft with the help of the "FOCO Social" (social focus) internal platform: The child's rights situation in Chile is monitored and an information pool for international media is ready. Not only in public, but also among MPs in the Chilean Parliament, the insight should prevail that a renewal of child protection rights is inevitable.

The fact that every child is entitled to education, physical integrity or a clean environment has not yet arrived in all Chilean heads. Raices has already achieved a lot to draw attention to the needs and rights of children. But the way between the current situation and an appropriate implementation of children's rights in Chile is still far.
