No child should suffer hunger

According to the United Nations, 735 million people are affected by hunger worldwide. The situation is particularly alarming for children: almost a quarter of all girls and boys under the age of five suffer from growth disorders. With their support, we help families to generate income with which they can feed their children. In our projects, we convey knowledge of ecological agriculture to ensure the nutrition of families in the long term.

Hunger and nutrition - data and facts

Why is there hunger despite sufficient food production?

People do not suffer from hunger and malnutrition because there is too little food worldwide, but due to distribution problems. These arise from armed conflicts, economic crises and climate change that disturb the supply chains and make food prices unaffordable in many countries. This situation is exacerbated by structural inequalities and economic interests that further restrict access to healthy, affordable foods.

Comprehensive measures are necessary in order to combat the global hunger sustainably. This includes the promotion of sustainable agricultural economy, the strengthening of local markets and political measures to support low -income population groups.

What can you do about hunger?

Dam speculation with food

A big problem for world nutrition is speculation with food. It influences prices and the availability of food on the global financial markets, which endangers nutritional safety. In order to combat global hunger, there is a demand to restrict the access of financial market speculators to the food markets. Speculators are particularly affected without a direct connection to physical markets, such as large banks and investment companies that drive up food prices through speculative business.

State acceptance assets or cooperative models could offer prices for prices. In addition, strategic raw materials such as oil and basic foods could be excluded from speculative trade in order to improve market stability and nutritional certainty.

Strengthen small farmers

A long-term and sensible strategy to combat hunger in many countries would be to strengthen smallholder farming families. Many hungry people are themselves smallholder farmers. Projects that secure their food production are essential for improving food security. Terre des Hommes supports families in its projects with seeds and training in sustainable farming methods to increase food availability.

In addition to supporting smallholder farmers, governments must create favorable conditions. Access to land, water, and seeds are fundamental rights that promote food security. For example, in Peru and Colombia Terre des Hommes partner organizations are promoting traditional farming methods and improving infrastructure to facilitate people's access to markets and keep food prices stable.
