"The whole city is incredibly quiet"

In Afghanistan, the entire extent of the destruction by earthquakes has become clear. More than 1,000 people, including at least 155 children, died. Tens of thousands of people are homeless. We collect donations to help children and families. Mohammad Osman from our partner organization AWEC is currently in the earthquake area and has answered three questions about the current situation.

Where are you right now and what is the situation for children?

At first we thought that there would be screams and noise everywhere, but instead the whole city is incredibly quiet. The situation for children is very difficult because instead of playing or going to school, they see dead family members and collapsed houses. They are still in shock and now see helpers, ambulances and helicopters everywhere. I also met children who were completely alone and looked for a place to sleep or rest.

What is the biggest challenge at the moment?

The biggest challenges in the region are to accommodate children and families and to supply them with food and clean drinking water. At the same time, we have to take care of children who have lost their parents.

What are the donations used for the Terre des Hommes collects in Germany?

Tents are sent for accommodation, clean drinking water, blankets and food. But people also just need cash to rebuild their houses. At the moment there is a lack of everything, which is why we are urgently dependent on support from abroad.
