Heavy earthquake Afghanistan
Several weeks after the heavy earthquakes in the province of Herat, the entire extent of the destruction is now visible. The number of fatalities is high, the damage to the infrastructure is significant. Terre des Hommes has initiated emergency aid measures: 300 families receive food packages with flour, rice, beans and oil, as well as gas cookers and cartridges and can supply themselves. Since the temperatures in Afghanistan are increasingly falling, 300 families with mattresses, blankets and tarpaulins caught, with which they can set up provisional accommodations.
More than 20 villages are affected by the quake. An estimated 2,500 people have died, more than 10,000 are injured, and about 2,000 houses were destroyed. Many families no longer have a home and have to be supplied in emergency accommodation where drinking water is already scarce. It is feared that infectious diseases will spread quickly. The economic damage and the long -term costs for reconstruction cannot currently be estimated.
