Afghanistan: Help for flood victims
The province of Baghlan in northern Afghanistan was hit by a devastating flood disaster on May 10, 2024: According to official reports, there are more than 300 deaths and over a thousand injured. 3,000 houses built from clay and stones are destroyed. Agricultural area was destroyed and cattle were lost. Around 600,000 people, half of them children, are affected by the consequences of the flood and urgently need humanitarian aid. Food, cookware and protection against the cold are missing.
Terre des Hommes has provided its local partner organization MAPWO (Movement Against Women's Poverty) with 30,000 euros to help flood victims: 150 families will receive a tarpaulin and three blankets to protect themselves from the cold. 600 children will receive food packages, and 150 families will be provided with cooking utensils, including a small gas cylinder, as the flood has devastated their homes.
Which families receive the relief goods is determined by the MAPWO employees, including the village communities. Homeless households guided by women, families with small children, older people and people with disabilities are preferred.
