Auxiliary measures for flood victims in Pakistan
Pakistan experiences the worst flood disaster in its history. After two months of heavy rains, almost a third of the country is under water. The torrential floods have cost more than 1,000 people their lives and caused severe devastation. 33 million people, including eleven million children, are affected. Thousands of people have lost their home and their livelihood, important infrastructure was destroyed. The floods tighten the already critical hunger situation.
The regions of Sindh and Balochistan in southwest Pakistan are the worst affected. Thousands of families are cut off and trapped in their damaged homes. Almost all houses in the flooded area are at risk of collapse. Terre des Hommes ' partner organization, PFF, has launched a rescue operation in various areas with two speedboats. More than 50 stranded families have been rescued and provided with food. Other partner organizations are planning evacuation measures, will provide emergency aid, and distribute food and tents to people who have lost their homes due to the powerful floods.
The long -term consequences can hardly be estimated at the moment. Many fields are flooded and the grain and vegetables are completely spoiled. There is a risk of a massive food crisis across the country. An estimated 19,000 schools were destroyed and more than 5,000 converted into emergency camps. Hundreds of thousands of children will not be able to attend lessons in the foreseeable future.
