Osnabrück/Berlin, December 12, 2024 – Following the fall of the Assad regime, Syria finds itself at a turning point. Thirteen years of civil war have left deep scars. The widespread sense of optimism is mixed with poverty and uncertainty about the future; children in particular suffer from hunger, disease, and the loss of family members. "The Syrian population has endured unimaginable suffering in recent years. Now, after the fall of the regime, rapid and effective humanitarian aid is needed, especially for children and families," says Joshua Hofert, spokesperson for the board of Terre des Hommes .
Our sister organization, Terre des Hommes Italy, has been providing humanitarian aid in Syria since 2006 and will now significantly expand its efforts. Children must receive food and, in view of the coming winter, a roof over their heads if their homes are destroyed. Many boys and girls are deeply afraid and need psychological support to mentally process their experiences of war and violence. Many of them also still have the catastrophe of February 2023 in mind, when the devastating earthquake destroyed entire cities. Schools and community centers are also to be built so that children can learn again and return to a more normal life.
"The political situation in Syria is currently still very uncertain," says Joshua Hofert. "We therefore call on all democratic parties to commit to the reconstruction of the country and to refrain from hasty discussions about repatriation and deportation."
