Learn after the flood

Humanitarian aid for children in Pakistan

They live in damp houses, are surrounded by water and fight against malaria, dengue and chikungunya fever. The Sohubatpur district in Belutschistan was already haunted four times between 2010 and 2022 of floods by the Monsun rain and rivers who hit the shores - and now again when a channel broke through the shore attachment in August 2024.

Hundreds of thousands of people were driven out by the water masses, the infrastructure is badly damaged. Almost all of the over 35 schools are affected. In the entire region, the electricity is canceled for 18 hours a day.

But: The children from sewbat track never stopped learning . "We don't set the lessons just because we don't have a building anymore ," says a teacher. "We want to enable the children to train, even if we have no infrastructure and facilities."

The children from Sohbatpur have learned to live with the catastrophe. "We cannot wait for an ideal environment and a fully equipped school," says a 9th grade boy. "Because the chances of restoring the infrastructure in the near future are low."

But in eight villages, the children were lucky: The "Gender and Development Organization" (GEO) began to restore their schools with the support of Terre des Hommes: the buildings are repaired, three computer libraries are set up in high schools, children's clubs are founded and sporting events are organized .. "I have now accessed a computer ," says Nasema. It is 15 Ahre old and goes into the 9th grade. “I didn't dare to dream. I'm just sorry for the girls in the neighboring villages who don't have this luck. "
