Very high disaster risk for America and Asia, Germany no longer at low risk
Berlin, September 8, 2022 - The global hotspots of the disaster risk due to natural hazards are in America and Asia. This is shown by the World Risk Index 2022, which the alliance development helps and the Institute for Peace Security Law and Humanitarian International Law of the Ruhr University Bochum (IFHV) published today as part of the 2022 world risk. The index published annually since 2011 has been completely revised for the 2022 edition. The world risk index calculates the disaster risk for 193 countries and thus 99 percent of the world population, the highest risk is the Philippines, India and Indonesia, followed by Colombia and Mexico. Germany is 101 in global midfield - and therefore no longer in the lowest of the five risk classes. »Floods, heat waves and droughts are increasing, climate change also has a massive impact on the risk assessment. For the risk of a country that becomes a disaster from an extreme natural event, the natural and climate-related exposure forms the first part of the equation. The second part is the so -called vulnerability of society. This vulnerability is the directly influential factor of the risk, «explains Peter Mucke, Managing Director of the Bündnis Development, and project manager of the World Risks 2022 with the focus topic" Digitization ". »The availability of new data makes the new world risk index a more precise and more differentiated risk image. Digitization provides important foundations for prevention. Digital data and systems expand the range of the possible for authorities and aid organizations in the event of a disaster. «
»Overall, the world risk index now comprises 100 instead of 27 indicators. In particular, the inclusion of indicators on the dismay of populations by disasters and conflicts in the past five years as well as refugees, displaced persons and asylum seekers in the new index - also against the background of the great global migration movements - has a significant more precise image of life realities in many countries, ”explains Daniel Weller from the IFHV. "In addition, the component exposure has been significantly expanded: While earthquakes, vertebral storms, floods, droughts and sea level rise have been taken into account in the previous world risk index, tsunamis are now added and a distinction is made between coastal and river floods."
