Data and facts

Emotional headline

According to the Geneva Convention, a refugee is a person who "... from the reasonable fear of persecution because of their breed, religion, nationality, belonging to a certain social group or because of their political conviction is outside the country whose nationality they have, and cannot use the protection of this country (...)."

The Geneva Refugee Convention only defines refugees as such when they have crossed a state border. People who are on the run within their own country are referred to as "Internally Displaced Personal" (IDP) or internal displaced persons.

The UN Convention on the Children's Rights also deals with the rights of refugee children. Article 22 (1) states: "The contracting states take suitable measures to ensure that a child who desires the legal position of a refugee (...) adequate protection and humanitarian aid in perception of the rights."

Refugee children in Germany

In Germany, the number of new asylum applications decreased significantly. Last year, 106,685 people came to Germany on the run from war and persecution. About half of the asylum seekers arrived in Germany are children and adolescents. Most came with their family, but many have also set off alone. In Germany, 2,232 children and adolescents who fled without parents made an asylum application last year.

Refugees worldwide

According to UNHCR, 108.4 million people were fleeing in 2022. 62.5 million of them are so -called domestic people who are looking for protection within the borders of their home country. 41 percent of refugees are children and adolescents under the age of 18. 52 percent of all people who fled their homeland came from only three countries in 2022: Syria (6.5 million), Ukraine (5.7 million) and Afghanistan (5.7 million).
