The federal government plans to reduce humanitarian aid by 1.2 billion and development cooperation by 941 million euros.
The Federal Cabinet has decided to draft the Federal Balential Household in 2025. The planned cuts particularly affect development cooperation and humanitarian aid - and thus endanger the protection and future prospects of children and adolescents worldwide.
Together with Venro, the Association for Development Policy and Humanitarian Aid, we have a decision against this reduction policy and are committed to protecting children's rights.
What does the draft budget provide?
- The funds for humanitarian aid in the Federal Foreign Office are to be reduced by 53 percent to just one billion euros.
- The budget of the Ministry of Development is expected to drop 8 percent to 10.28 billion euros - the third year in a row a decline of around one billion euros.
- The funds for international climate and environmental protection are also to be reduced by around 100 million euros or around 12 percent.
The cuts not only endanger ongoing projects, but also the ability of Germany to react to global crises. The international promise to provide at least 0.7 percent of economic performance for development cooperation and humanitarian aid is clearly failed with this budget. The federal government would also break its promise to provide 6 billion euros for international climate finance annually. You can find the complete Venro position with all details and demands here.
Why is that so dangerous?
566 million children live in poverty worldwide, almost 500 million live in conflict and war zones, over 48 million are on the run. Right now it takes more, no less support for children and adolescents who are most affected by poverty, crises and conflicts.
Still is time
The Bundestag will advise the budget draft until the end of September. That means: we can still make a difference together! Terre Des Hommes will work together with Venro and other organizations for strong development cooperation and humanitarian aid - for protection, education and future prospects of children and adolescents worldwide.
