Aachen: Street music for street children

Soft sounds, and occasionally louder ones, resonated from the corridors around the Elisenbrunnen fountain. They aroused curiosity and invited the audience to linger. The Elisenbrunnen fountain in Aachen became a musical stage as the string players from the Hanbruch elementary school gave a concert in aid of Terre des Hommes .

Under the direction of the dedicated string teachers Illa Tönnies, Johanna Schmidt, and Kasia Gasztecka, around 30 children demonstrated their skills before an enthusiastic audience that loudly demanded encores. With the "Street Music for Street Children" campaign, the students collected donations for children who have to live on the streets. The atmosphere of the concert was cheerful and enthusiastic. The young musicians presented a diverse program ranging from classical pieces to modern melodies. Their dedication and commitment were rewarded with enthusiastic applause from the audience. Many spectators were deeply impressed by the musical performance of the elementary school students and the successful organization of the event.

The annual concert at the Elisenbrunnen fountain has now become a firm tradition—a highlight in the calendar of the Hanbruch Elementary School and the city of Aachen. It impressively demonstrates how music, as a universal language, can connect people while simultaneously supporting important social projects.
