On Family Day on May 15, 2025, Joshua Hofert, board spokesman of the children’s rights organization Terre des Hommes , said:
“Families belong together. This also applies to families who have to escape! In its coalition agreement, the new federal government has stipulated the possibilities for family reunification - although many refugee children and young people have already lived separately from their families for years. It is socially undisputed that great importance families have for the growing up of children. Especially children and adolescents who have to flee from their countries of origin helps familiar support enormously with arrival and integration. Instead of strengthening families, the new federal government now wants to limit legal access routes. We call on the federal government to organize family reunification in the sense of the rights of children and adolescents easily and unbureaucratically. "
Together with the International Rescue Committee and Save the Children Terre des Hommes , supported by 30 children's and human rights organizations, has issued an appeal to the new German government on the occasion of Family Day. Together, the organizations are calling for a clear commitment to family reunification as a safe access route.
