Escape from violence in Myanmar
The tensions in the Myanmarian Karen region escalated before Christmas. The conflict between the Karen National Union (Knu) and the Burmese military culminated in bloody fights for years. The military bombed several villages, there were numerous fatalities and wounded. More than 10,000 people were driven out. Most try to get across the border to Thailand to get to safety before fighting.
In the past, Thailand has tried to prevent refugees from crossing the border, among other things, with pushbacks. The refugees who make it to Thailand are often refused adequate humanitarian aid. Terre des Hommes, together with other organizations, signed an appeal that asks the Thai government to give international organizations access to the border region so that the humanitarian aid of the refugee is guaranteed.
