"I'm struggling with my voice"

Pakistan

Muqaddas is committed to protecting mangrove forests

Muqaddas Tahir (20) is involved with the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) to protect mangroves in her native Pakistan. This puts her in conflict with all those who profit from the timber and land trade.

“Two years ago, I saw men cutting down mangroves along a stream. I was shocked – and I took up the fight against the timber mafia and the land grabbers who are clearing our precious mangroves, majestic protectors of our nature, to gain timber and building land.”

I fight with my voice. By raising awareness in our communities and encouraging girls to stand up for this vital ecosystem. As a young woman, it's not easy to stand up to those in power. Especially since criminals are often supported by influential people – for example, in politics or the police.

Threats via social media

Our commitment to a clean environment disrupts their business. PFF activists have been threatened, arrested, and abducted for opposing the reckless development of the coast and offshore islands, and for campaigning against the often illegal fishing by Pakistani and foreign trawlers, which has dramatically reduced fish stocks.

I too receive threats via social media. Unfortunately, even some of my male relatives disapprove of my activism. This hurts me deeply. But when I see a tiny plant thriving amidst adversity, it strengthens my resolve.

My goal is a genuine, comprehensive ban on mangrove logging along the entire coast. Strict penalties for those who violate this would protect this vital ecosystem
