"I fight with my voice"

Pakistan

Muqaddas is committed to protecting the mangrove forests

Muqaddas Tahir (20) is involved in the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum (PFF) for protecting the mangroves in their homeland Pakistan. This brings them into conflict with all those who earn the wood and the country business.

“Two years ago I saw men picked up mangroves on a stream. I was shocked - and took up the fight against the wooden mafia and the land robbers, which are our valuable mangrove, majestic protectors of our nature, blinds to win wood and building land.

I fight with my voice. By creating awareness in our communities and encouraging girls to stand up for this vital ecosystem. As a young woman, it is not easy to assert herself against the powerful. Above all, because the criminals are often supported by influential people - for example in politics or the police.

Threats about social media

Our commitment to a clean environment disturbs your business. Activists of PFF were threatened, arrested and kidnapped because they are committed to the ruthless development of the coast and the offshore islands because they are involved in the often illegal fishing by Pakistani and foreign trawlers, which has now dramatically reduced the fish stands.

I also receive threats on social media. Unfortunately, some of my male relatives even misjudge my activism. That hurt me deeply. But when I see how a tiny plant thrives in the middle of adversity, it encourages me in my determination.

My goal is an actual, comprehensive ban on deforestation of mangroves on the entire coast. Strict punishments for those who violate this would protect this important ecosystem. «
