"It is high time to act!"

Philippines: Khyles use for the environment and children's rights

In December 2022, extreme rains on Mindanao, the home island of Khyle, triggered a disaster. A flood of falls tore houses and trees with it. A relative lost his life. Several classmates had to interrupt the school because their belongings had been washed away.

By this time, the now 20-year-old had long since begun taking action against climate change. Through his Terre des Hommes partner organization "Gitib" and his organization "Youth for Climate Justice," he plants trees, campaigns against deforestation, and calls on politicians to take action.

Your support for strong children!

Khyle's commitment as a child rights activist initially started differently: "I am a feminist! In the Philippines the patriarchy is still widespread. Girls, you say, can do girls." For Khyle it was clear early on: he has a responsibility to work for gender justice.

Khyla began to educate children and adolescents about the widespread problem of unwanted pregnancies. A taboo subject for many adults, but young people like Khyl can address the topic at eye level. Over time, the fight against children's marriages came into focus. Because despite a legal ban, many girls in childhood are still forced to get married in poorer regions, especially in poorer regions

"There are already many people without privileges that suffer massively from climate change."
Khyl

"In environmental protection, feminism ... The pattern is always the same: those who have no privileges and less access to education anyway - people in less rich countries, especially children and especially girls. And even though we know what to do. We can improve the situation. It is high time to act!"
