terre des hommes promotes psychosocial support of traumatized children
Osnabrück/Berlin, February 21, 2024 - Children and adolescents have been living in Ukraine with death, fear and destruction for two years. At least 560 minors were killed, according to the United Nations, over 1,200 were injured in the war. More than 19,000 children were delayed from the occupied areas to Russia, the number of unreported cases is enormous. Countless children have lost mothers, fathers or their home, have to settle up again after fleeing or cannot go to school. Young people see their future dreams burst.
"No child should have to grow up under such conditions," says Joshua Hofert, board spokesman for Terre des Hommes. »One of our most important work focuses is therefore their psychosocial and therapeutic support. Because many children and adolescents are traumatized by cruel experiences. The longer the war lasts, the greater the risk that a lost generation will grow in Ukraine. Our goal is therefore to alleviate the consequences of this war for the children as well as possible. This often succeeds when our Ukrainian partner organizations create safe spaces in which the children and young people play, tinker or do sports, so they can simply be a child and forget the war for a while.
Terre des Hommes works with a network of around 20 local partner organizations and is currently promoting 13 projects in Ukraine. In addition to psychosocial support for children and adolescents, it is about direct humanitarian aid through food, medication or hygiene articles and the integration of families who had to flee to the west of Ukraine or neighboring countries. This help has become possible by taking over 17 million euros in donations and public grants.
"The need is immensely," emphasizes Joshua Hofert, "I was able to convince myself of this during my visit to Ukraine. Donations for Ukraine, on the other hand, decrease and it is becoming increasingly difficult for us to get attention to the dramatic situation of children. In particular, we are calling for the federal government and the international community not to allow the rights of the Ukrainian children and adolescents to commit to the rights of the rights. This works best by strengthening our back civil society organizations in Ukraine. The reconstruction will only succeed with a strong civil society. "
